# Back up and restore your notes

Download a copy of your notes to keep them safe or move them to another device.

## Download a backup

Open the File menu and choose the encrypted backup option. Choose a password, a key file, or both, then download the backup. Keep the password and any required key file somewhere safe.

## Restore your notes

Open Notepea on the destination device and import the backup file. Supply its password or key file when asked. Open the imported notes and check them before removing the original copy.

## If you forget your password

A recovery code can help you unlock notes that are still in this browser. It cannot bring back deleted browser data. There is no account password reset, so keep your recovery codes and backups separately.
